TINSUKIA: With an aim to unite culturally all ethnic Tai groups living in Assam and Northeastern Region of India, the United Tai Ethnic Socio-cultural Organisation (UTESCO), a non-governmental organization based in Assam is holding a mega ethnic cultural festival at Chao-Pha Suhungmung Ground Kakopathar in Tinsukia district from January 18 to January 22, 2024.
Organized under the aegis of All Tai communities of Northeast India, the event is likely to showcase the unique culture of the Tai community in a national as well as in international arena. The 5-day programme will witness book fair, ethnic trade fair, hand loom (drapery) fair, ethnic food fair, cultural extravaganza, art & craft fair, exhibition of endemic & medicinal plants, international convention & seminar.
The participation in the festival is expected both nationally and globally, said Prof Rana Kumar Changmai, president of the organising committee adding further that the prominent Tai groups in Assam and NER of India are Tai Ahom, Tai Khampti, Tai Phake, Tai Khamyang, Tai Aiton, Tai Turung and Tai Lai who share common language, common culture, common food habits, common rituals and common drapery. It is a matter of concern that the ethnic uniqueness of the Tai groups is on the verge of extinction besides the Tai language as well as Tai culture and language are facing challenges due to unabated globalization. He called upon the participants including cultural artiste from anywhere in the globe to confirm their participation including travel itinerary on or before December 31, 2023.
